James Wickersham built his house on what is now Elm Street in North Liberty Township and started a grocery store there soon after its grant . He also operated a Mechanics shop at 8 Elm St which later became the First National Bank . John Q. Adams died in 1880 and is buried at Maplewood Cemetery in Peoria Heights , Illinois
In 1847, the first permanent settler in North Liberty was John A. Richardson. In 1865, the town was named after General George Armstrong Custer during the Indian Wars. The city was founded on a bluff overlooking Iowa River and became an important transportation and trade center for the region.
