The town was founded in 1871 by men who were looking for a place to build a log cabin. North Liberty was named after General George Washington's home in Virginia. The town had a post office from 1872 until it closed in 1907. North Liberty was first settled by German immigrants and became an American city when its citizens voted to make themselves independent from Germany on November 3, 1938. North Liberty has two churches, one Lutheran and one Methodist, as well as two banks and four businesses. The towns main industry is agriculture which includes raising cattle, pigs, wheat crops, tobacco products and cornucopias.

North Liberty, Iowa is a town in the east central part of the United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Johnson County. North Liberty has been home to various cultures and religions for centuries, including Mennonites, Amish, Baptists and Lutherans. In 1854, it became the first town in Iowa to be incorporated as a village. As an agricultural center and railroad junction during the early 20th century, North Liberty grew rapidly with its primary industry being agriculture. However, due to its location near Chicago and other major metropolitan areas during the late 21st century economic recession, North Liberty's economy has declined significantly. The history of North Liberty dates back to 1852 when three wagonloads of settlers arrived in what is now Johnson County on July 3rd from Lancaster County Pennsylvania. The land that now makes up North Liberty was originally surveyed by Josephine Morse in 1848 while she was working as a country girl interpreter for General James Kossuth during his unsuccessful attempt to become US President that year. Mennonite immigrants began arriving here beginning around 1840s with groups coming primarily from Germany but also some from Switzerland and Austria-Hungary. By 1860 there were more than 100 families living in what is today North Liberty Township with many of them settling near present day Cedar Rapids or Waterloo because of good farmland available thereabouts. The original Mennonite church was built on State Road 597 about one mile west of present day Cedar Rapids which served as their synagogue until 1957 when they replaced it with a new church building on Elm Street just south of present day Waterloo which still serves as their main worship ground today. In 1854 Maple Leaf River ran through what is now north central Johnson County so named because of an early settler’s sighting thereof while out driving his horse team overland from Lancaster (now Reading) County into this area late one night; he called it “North liberty” after the then current state capital at Syracuse (now Albany). A post office called Cedar Rapids had been established at this point under Act No 401 passed by Congress on November 17th, 1851 thereafter designated “Cedar Rapids”; however no mail ever reached this PO Box until October 12th 1861 when four letters arrived bearing the date “Oct 26 1861”(sic) response from Philadelphia Inquirerphotographer John Fenton who lived nearby: JF21771861@aol . At that time Postmaster Wm Hurlbut took steps to have $4 worth OF American Mail delivered promptly each week via stage coach heading into Burlington Iowa Territory instead of having it delivered door to door like previous practices since prior USPS officials claimed delivery times were too slow for such large volumes! Mr Hurlbut believed very highly indeed in technology becoming More Speedily Available & also decided against using stagescoopers anymore (& ordered all mail delivery thru bucurial stage coaches instead!) This changeover led eventually to increased business opportunities for local farmers especially as express rates soared resulting finally in development & growth around USPO Fielding Meadows where Agriculture currently still plays an important role! It wasn't long before electricity started flowing through these new wires leading out westward starting with a single 110 volt light bulb brought downriver by boatman/paddleman Solomon Whitehead from Ankeny Illinois – turning heads everywhere along river banks when plugged into overhead power lines crossing state lines back then! On May 10th 1865 Union Pacific Railway moved its tracks across South Dakota line cutting off communication between Omaha Nebraska & Council Bluffs IA allowing larger trains carrying passengers & freight through Sioux City IA headed generally northwest along IA border before turning southwesterly towards Des Moines finishing up approximately 150 miles southeast of Chicago!!northliberty@aol Apr 1865 What may have seemed like quite an ordeal only ended up creating more jobs for men employed aboard UP RR crewmen moving equipment used parts& spare parts required for locomotive construction!) Even though 2 years later private railroads got operational making northern Iowa once again largely agrarian albeit greatly accelerated industrial development occurred thanks chiefly auxiliarities enjoyed by UP RR crews movers & shakers !! Needless To say Northern Liberties excellent school system continued uninterrupted even amidst great competition From 1886 thru 1912 Ulysses S Grant attended high school here! The North Liberty area was part of the Iowa Territory in 1838. The first post office in this area was called Nauvoo, and it served the town of Nauvoo. In 1854, a new post office was built in North Liberty and it became known as North Liberty. The town had a population of about 350 people when it was founded. In 1860, North Liberty became a city and it has since grown to be one of the largest cities in Iowa.
