North Liberty was founded in 1847 by George Washington Fuller and his wife, Anna. The town was named for the Northern Territory of Iowa, which at that time included present-day North Liberty and several other towns.Fuller worked as a farmer and surveyor in Illinois before coming to Iowa in 1841 to start a farm near Cedar Rapids. He became interested in the development of new land around Cedar Rapids, and he soon started purchasing tracts of land in what is now North Liberty. Fuller's grandson, George Washington Fuller Jr., who succeeded him as president of the town, played an important role in developing North Liberty into one of the most important small towns in Iowa during the 19th century. The Fullers had two children: Anna died young while they were living in Illinois, and G W F Jr. moved to Iowa with his family in 1846. The Fullers built a log cabin on their property where they lived until their death in 1902. The building still stands today and is used as a museum today. In addition to his house, G W F Jr.'s barn also remains standing along with a number of other buildings on what is now State Street within walking distance of the Museum today. George Washington Fuller Sr.'s son George Washington Fuller II helped establish many other businesses throughout North Liberty including hardware store, grocery store, restaurant, doctor's office (later renamed First United Methodist Church), post office (opened November 25th 1850), bank (opened October 15th 1861), cotton ginnery (opened 1865), millinery shop (opened 1893), blacksmith shop (Opened 1916) and carpenter shop ( Opened 1922). These businesses gave employment to many local residents during those early years when there were not many jobs available outside of Cedar Rapids proper. Many people are buried or memorialized within these businesses or around them today including Mrs Mary Afuller Fuller who operated the grocery store from 1912 until her death in 1969; Mr John Crampton who owned both Hardware Store & Restaurant from 1915 until his death; Mrs Alice Hagerty whose bakery occupied part of Post Office Building from 1921 until it closed down due to arson; Mrs Lula Whitlock who ran Dr J W Farley's medical office from 1922 until her death; Mrs Florence Kline who operated NWA Dance Hall from 1929 until her retirement;; etc…etc… In 1951 North Liberty experienced its first tornado outbreak which destroyed much property but only injured two people out of some 100 people affected by the storm! This event served as a reminder that tornadoes can happen anywhere at any time and that everyone should always be prepared for such events! After this tragic event many decisions were made by city officials about how best to protect citizens against future tornadoes! One example was City Council decision #2 which stated "that all structures erected since [the tornado] must comply with state requirements for safety" This meant that new buildings erected after 1951 would haveto meet certain safety standards set by state government before being allowed inside city limits! It also meant that anyone owning or operating any typeof business within city limits between 1950-1951 would haveto get permits from city officials prior to beginning operations! Lastly this decision served as another warning shot across the bow of anyone thinking about starting up any typeof business without first getting approval fromcity officials
The North Liberty area was first settled in 1851. The town of North Liberty was founded on the east side of Iowa River. It grew quickly, and by 1875 it had a population of over 200 people. In 1907, the city of North Liberty merged with the neighboring town of Burlington.
