North Liberty is a town in Hancock County, Iowa, United States. The population was 6,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines–Hancock Metropolitan Statistical Area. North Liberty is home to the North Liberty Paper Company and to North Liberty High School. The first settler in what is now north Liberty was Nicholas Lambert in 1836. The first post office was established in 1841 and the first store was opened in 1851. In 1871, a train depot was built and it served as the central point for transportation within the community until it closed in 1978. In 1916, North Liberty became the site of one of fourteen coal mines operating in Hancock County when Wabash Coal Corporation purchased land east of present-day southbound I-80 and constructed a mine on what is now called " Clarke Road". This mine produced over 1 million tons of coal from 1917 to 1922. It reopened as an open pit mine after being repurposed as an agricultural farm with crops such as corn, beans, peas, potatoes and wheat during World War II before closing again due to environmental concerns about high levels of lead and other toxins inside themine A new shopping center was developed adjacent to Clarke Road Mine which opened in 1984 named "Shoppingtown USA", later renamed "North Liberty Plaza" after then Mayor Tom Masterson's suggestion that it be dedicated specifically to retail development within town limits In 2006, Shoppers mall across I-235 from NPL closed citing economic reasons; however some residents continue to use South Valley Mall adjacent thereto for groceries and other services while festivities are held at NPL yearly As people began moving into north Liberty during the late 1800s there were few opportunities for them to live near by any big city amenities or businesses so most people either lived close by their families or slowly moved out over time depending on what they could find available closer by like farmland or mining rights around town
