North Liberty is a small town in south-central Iowa. The population was 5,883 at the 2010 census. North Liberty is located on the eastern edge of Des Moines County and about 15 miles (24 km) northeast of the city of Iowa City. The community takes its name from the north fork of the Des Moines River. The land that now makes up North Liberty was first settled by English colonists in 1765 as part of what is now northwest Iowa. A second tornado touching down two years later killed one person and injured eight others in what is still considered to be one of the most destructive tornadoes in this area. In 1907, North Liberty lost its elementary school when it burned down due to a fire caused by vandals who had broken into the building while it was being used as a storage facility for local farmers. North Liberty regained its elementary school status with construction of an associated library/school complex which opened on October 9, 1923; also home to North Liberty High School until it closed in 1999 after many additions were made to make it more efficient including an athletic field and new classrooms addition which included echo chambers for auditory training purposes during World War II among other features . On July 8th, 1998 there was another devastating tornado that struck parts of South Sioux City IA leaving over 25 people dead and over 100 injured including many children playing outside their homes

The first settler on North Liberty was John Scudder in 1836. He and his family established a farmstead on the square lot where they now live. In 1848, Iowa statehood was granted to the United States, and North Liberty became a part of the new state. The town received its current name from General James K. Polk, whoaded it during his Presidential Campaign in 1856.
