The first European to settle in what is now North Liberty was a group of French traders in the early 17th century. This area was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland and at first, Europeans used the area for hunting and fishing. The English also began to explore this area during this time, but they did not make permanent settlements until the late 18th century. In 1795, the United States Congress created Iowa Territory from parts of Delaware and Michigan Territory. The land between miles Prairie and Des Moines Rivers was allocated to Iowa Territory on November 3, 1800. In 1854, Iowa became a state when it was organized as a result of the Kansas-Nebraska Act. In 1907, North Liberty Township was established within Iowa Territory. On December 14, 1911, State Highway 10 (now US 61) was designated through North Liberty Township from Cedar Rapids to Amesburg. On July 1, 1915, North Liberty Township became an independent municipality with its own government entity under the name “North Liberty”. On February 5, 1922 North Liberty Borough Council merged into North Liberty Township for business purposes only; however all operations continued as separate municipalities until March 7th when township officials repealed all municipal merger plans due to lack of support from residents/taxpayers
