The university became Iowa State University–Ames in 1909 when it moved from Des Moines to Ames after Des Moines City Hall burned down in 1885. The university acquired land adjacent to what are now northeast and east streets of downtown Ames around 1912, giving rise to its current campus area south of First Street between Belmont Avenue and Douglas Road (now I-280). In 1969,Iowa State University added an agricultural college known as Wright College which merged with Iowa State University–Ames in 1998 From 1960 until 1978, North Liberty was home to RCA radio station KFMB; this facility later served as antenna height for WFUW-TV (ABC) owned by Time Warner Broadcasting Company before that company merged with Comcast SportsNet Chicago prior to its sale to NBCUniversal parent company Comcast in 2013. On July 12th 2017 KCNC television affiliate announced they will move their transmitter from Cedar Rapids Airport near Clearwater Beach Florida onto former WCVB transmitter property off Interstate 80 just outside Independence MO due Charlotte Hornets new arena opening next year

In 1854, North Liberty was named after the town ofLiberty in Delaware County, New York. The name came from a grant by General George Washington to the town in 1795. In 1854, North Liberty was platted and became a city with its own government.
