Despite this event, North Liberty continued to grow and become a major center for commerce and culture in central Iowa. In 1907, North Liberty voters approved annexation by Cedar Rapids. This decision made North Liberty one of the cities within Cedar Rapids boundaries. In 1914, NorthLiberty voters passed an ordinance which provided for racial segregation within public transportation services in north-central Iowa communities limited to White residents only. This measure was repealed two years later after protests from Black citizens of Cedar Rapids who felt their rights were being violated by the city's segregated transportation system. In 1947, Cedar Rapids annexed north-central Iowa towns including North Liberty into its limits making it an even greater metropolitan area with over 1 million inhabitants
North Liberty was founded in 1854 by James Fenton, a planter and politician. The town originally had six homes, but it grew to include over 100 residents by 1860. In 1871, North Liberty became the seat of government for the newly formed Des Moines County. Over time, North Liberty became a thriving city with a busy commercial district and its own courthouse and jail. In the early 21st century, North Liberty is home to two small businesses and a number of restaurant options as well as an art gallery and library.
