North Liberty, Iowa was founded in 1854 by John C. Fremont and his wife Sarah. The town was named after the north branch of the Des Moines River. The first settlers were farmers who had to find a place to live since they were not given a land grant from the US government. They started a small community on the west bank of the river where they built their homes and businesses. By 1870, North Liberty had grown so large that it needed its own post office. In 1872, North Liberty became part of what is now Iowa City and its name changed to that of its current city. North Liberty has been home to many notable people over the years such as James Kapp, General George Armstrong Custer, and Jesse Jackson Jr.. The city also hosted events like the 1984 World Cup which provided some much-needed revenue for local businesses. Today, North Liberty is an important center for commerce in central Iowa and is known for its wide variety of shops, restaurants, and attractions.
The first permanent settler in North Liberty was a family of Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1847. The area now known as North Liberty was part of the Black Hawk War territory and was under military control until 1851, when it became Iowa Territory. In 1861, the Iowa Territorial Legislature created a townsite in what is now North Liberty, named for General James K. Polk and his wife Julia Boggs Polk. The plat included land that had been purchased by the Polish-American Relief Society from Nicholas Czarnecki, one of the founder members of this organization. In 1865, the town incorporated as a city with a population of about 200 people. This was also the year that Des Moines County was organized from parts of Black Hawk and Winnebago counties. The city grew rapidly and by 1889 had reached its current size with an estimated population of 4,500 people. Steel production began in Iowa City in nearby Cedar Rapids in 1886 and soon extended to North Liberty; steel products were an important factor in helping to drive growth for the city during its early years. In downtown North Liberty there are several shops or stores which have been around since before 1860 such as J & P Smith’s grocery store (founded 1860), George Wacholder’s cigar store (1865), Farrell Bros bakery (1868), Hennepin Brewing Company (1892) and others
