North Liberty is a town in south-central Iowa, United States. Its population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1851 as a result of the efforts of Colonel George P. Smith and his friends to purchase land east of what is now Cedar Rapids and make it into a town. The name "north liberty" was chosen because the area north of Griggs Ferry Road lay within present-day North Liberty Township and Clear Lake Township, both within Griggs County. The first post office in North Liberty was established on November 2, 1851, by Jno. Ackerlund. The first store in town was built by Wm. Hickey on July 6, 1852. In 1865, a schoolhouse and teacher's house were erected in town; this building served until 1907 when it burned down. In 1907–08, North Liberty had its first telephone service with the installation of two telephones by Wm., Chas., and Geo.. These phones were used for local discussion between farmers and their wives during market days or for calling up family members who lived far away during winter months when there wasn't electricity available locally or when batteries ran out due to weather conditions or power failures outside the township limits (possible exceptions included Tomahawk Creek Township which had its own phone system). On October 3rd 1908 North Liberty had its first parade which consisted of floats decorated with flags from different towns along the way including Cedar Rapids which set off from Griggs Ferry Rd at 4pm under blue sky high skies following route 22nd Ave to Center Park across from city hall then back home viaGriggs Ferry Rd turning left onto Maple St thence returning home through city limits
