Newton is a city in the U.S. state of Iowa, located on the Des Moines River. Newton was founded in 1847 by James Wigglesworth and became a town in 1855. It was named for Isaac Newton, an English mathematician who developed calculus at the University of Cambridge in 1679. According to the 2010 census, Newton has a population of 34 people. Newton is one of four cities that make up the City of Des Moines metropolitan area, which had a population of 569,545 as of July 1, 2018 according to The Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. The other three cities are Ames (population: 174,812), Cedar Rapids (population: 102,553), and Waterloo (population: 54,312). Together they form what is known as “The City Cluster” because they are all within walking distance of each other and share many common services and amenities such as public transportation and restaurants. The history of Newton began with James Wigglesworth who arrived in 1847 from Liverpool with his family after purchasing land near what is now Webster Groves Cemetery. On July 12th that year he organized a meeting at his home to establish a town site on the north bank of the Des Moines River where he would build his house and sell goods he had brought with him from England. At first only ten people showed up but soon enough others came including two brothers named Asbury and John Prentice who also owned land adjacent to Wigglesworth's lot on Clinton Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue which later became 22nd Street.–Today part of Washington Boulevard separates Newton from Interstate 80 just east of Interstate 35W.–In 1855 James Wigglesworth laid out streets grid system making it easier for travelers to find their way around town.- Two years later on October 10th Drury erected a schoolhouse/ courthouse along State street corner 3rd avenue opposite Wiggliesworth residence- In 1861 Rev A B Lewis set up religious classes for children living near by under tree shade inside old brick building behind Post Office- Today there is still an old brick building next door to Post Office that used to be used as classrooms.- In 1865 Rev H C White organized Methodist Episcopal Church No 2 orphanage – Now called Parkhurst Children's Home- In 1870 Mr S R Goudreau built flour mill – Which actually started operating since 1787 when Frenchman Pierre Lalande established flour mill here while stationed at Fort Snelling during war
