Newton was a village in Crawford County, Iowa, United States. Newton was platted in 1875 by the Union Pacific Railroad as part of the Omaha, Council Bluffs andCouncil Bluffs Railway. The population was 7 at the time of its incorporation. Newton had a school and shop until 1903 when it became a post office. The first postmaster was W. H. Burnett. A store opened in 1907 and continued to be operated until 1951 when it closed due to changes in postal service. In 1916, Newton had a library which served as the only library in Crawford County for over fifty years The Newton School District licensed its first kindergarten from Boston Educational Supply Company on September 16, 1922 and soon after built an addition to their building that housed the kindergarten until 1955 In 1927-28 Newton received an equipment grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) through Project seedseed which allowed forthe planting of interplanetary plants by villagers throughout America In 1957-58 new school buildings were erected with funds provided by Mayor Harry Crouch of Des Moines who also helped get them funded through his city's bond issue

Newton was a small town in the eastern United States when James Newton moved to it in 1847. The town had been founded by Captain John Smith, who settled there in 1827. At first, Newton was just a single farmstead and it took many years for the community to grow. But after Capt. John's death, his children continued to live there and eventually developed into what is now known as Newton. In 1853, Newton became the seat of county government for three-county area which included present-day Iowa and Nebraska. In 1905, the population of Newton had grown to 1,500 people and it continued to grow until 1940 when it decreased to 900 people due to World War II effects. After World War II ended, much of the local industry (such as agriculture) died out and most residents left the town or changed their residences within it over time. Today only a few remnants remain from early Newton life: The old courthouse remains standing; various pioneer graves are located aroundtown; and part of an old privy still stands on Main Street near where current day First Baptist Church stands today. The history of Newton begins with James Newton who moved here from Virginia about 1827. He started out farming but quickly realized that he needed more space so he built a cabin on what is now Highway 6 in 1830-31. There were several other farmers living here at this time including Andrew Fellows & family who also ran a tannery onsite which produced high quality leather goods for military use during the American Revolution In 1840 Captains Smith’s son Thomas bought some land northeast of town from Major Rufus King & began selling lots next door thereto which became known as “Newton Place” after him & his son James took up residence thereabout1845-46). It was not long before others followed suit with many settlers arriving by stage coach or wagon overland from Virginia or Ohio during this period.. By 1850 most everyone in town had either bought land or built houses west of town on lots donated by friends or neighbors……….the growth of these new settlements led ultimately to their incorporation as townships within Woodbury County…..It should be noted that although Northern Illinois Territory was organized into states – Iowa did not join until 14 February 1861 – thus making its earliest formulator…..In 1865 Iowans voted successfully against annexation by Illinois resulting in strong protestations being made throughout the state against such unilateral action…………….Some Newtons did indeed move away subsequentto Iowan secession but generally they looked back rather than moving away alltogether…………………………………..
