Hodge established a school in Newton that became famous for its primitive brick building and large academic classes. In 1870, local businessman Augustus Smedley donated land to build an academy on which he would establish a Normal School for Boys (later renamed University of Iowa). In 1875-76, Newton's first post office opened with five mailboxes and three residents serving as clerks. The current courthouse was built between 1907 and 1909 on . During World War II, the military barracks known as Camp Sherman were located in Newton; they are now used as apartments by UI students. A new high school wing was completed in 2003-2004 when Newton High School merged with nearby Burlington High School to form one large high school complex known today simply as "Newton". According to the 2000 census there were 585 people living in Newton Township when it was organized into Douglas County in 1854; this figure increased to 1,028 by 1880 when all but five townships within Douglas County were organized into districts; then it decreased gradually until reaching 581 persons (based upon counts taken during 1990 through 2000) at the 2010 census. The percentage increase since 1980 can be accredited with only slight increases elsewhere: mostly due to larger families (+2%) and more recent immigrants (+7%).
