After serving in North America for several years, Newton returned to England and became a clergyman. In 1775 he joined the American Revolution as a delegate from Grantham Parish. After being elected president of Parliamentarians in Great Britain (1776-77), Newton served as Ulysses S. Grant's secretary of war during the American Civil War (1865-68). Returning to America after the war, Newton resumed his clerical career and died on August 29, 1847. His death marked the end of an era for Newtonians in America; however, their ideas live on through many scientific advancements made by those who followed him.
In 1792, Isaac Newton moved to Newton, Iowa and founded a school. In 1847, the first store in Newton was opened. By 1870, there were ten stores in Newton. The population of Newton grew from 2,500 in 1850 to over 11,000 by 1880. In 1903, the first gasoline station was opened in Newton.
