In 1945, Newton became home to one of America's largest air defense radar installations when it purchased land from JG Farbenochemicals Company along with neighboring cities Waukee and Cedar Rapids for $7 million dollars. The installation became known as "Newton Park" and continued operation until 1996 when it was sold to Mid-Continent Regional Airport Authority for use as an airport terminal building. The war-time growth stopped after the end of World War II but new businesses began to emerge around Newton during the 1980s that continue today including several hospitals (University Health Network - now called UnitedHealth Group), two shopping malls (CenturyLink Center - now Sears), and three restaurants: Ponderosa Steakhouse, Red Lobster, and Quiznos; all located within walking distance of each other or just down the street from downtown if desired). In recent years there has been growing interest among students in moving into Newton because of its excellent public schools which offer high school graduation rates above 90%.
