In 1881, Newton had a population of just over 100 people. By 1907, the town had increased to 1,700 residents and by 1930 it had reached its current size of around 2,000 people. The growth in the town was due in part to the arrival of the railroad in 1885. The railroad brought with it new jobs and also new streets and businesses that sprang up throughout Newton. One such business was the J. C. Penney store which opened in 1888 on State Street. This store played an important role in Newton’s growth as it became one of the first local businesses to offer services such as dry cleaning and banking. Additionally, Newton’s school system soon became well known for its high quality education offerings which helped contribute to its continued growth over time.
