Newton is east of Sioux City on the Missouri River and west of Cedar Rapids on the Arkansas River. Newton was founded by Isaac Newton in 1836 as a small town named after his father. The original plat for Newton included only a few acres of land and its first buildings were wooden huts. Over time, Newton grew to include a school and two churches. In 1854, the new courthouse was built and became home to the county court until it moved to Cedar Rapids in 1914. In 1915, Newton's first railroad station was opened with four tracks that connected with the Kinnaird-Pella Railroad. The railroad played an important role in developing Newton into a town hosting many businesses and residents over time including auto dealerships, Grain Elevators, Mills, restaurants and more than one high school. The current civic center was built in 1922 as part of a larger project to improve local infrastructure during World War II which also included construction of several homes along Griffin Road (now Interstate 435). One notable event that took place at this location occurred when President Harry Truman stopped by for dinner on October 3rd 1948 while traveling through Iowa on his presidential campaign trail and stopping at Waterloo Depot before continuing on to Des Moines for lunch at Regal restaurant before returning to Independence Hall for dinner where he delivered his speech In 1954, Franklin D Roosevelt came through South Dakota during his final trip across America when he visited Newton en route from Omaha to Council Bluffs IA He stopped at Wakarusa Station before continuing on his journey northeast towards Minnesota

John Crayton played an important role in developing both Newton and Des Moines County during his time as mayor from 1922-1928. He developed many local businesses including banks and grocery stores which helped fuel the growth of both communities during their early years. Crayton also helped create a number of parks in both cities which are still popular today. His legacy can be seen throughout both Newton and Des Moines Counties today as a builder who helped make these places into successful communities that continue to thrive today
