By 1900, Newton had become one of the most important towns in the state of Iowa. Newton's growth was due to its location on the newly created Southeastern Railroad. The railroad allowed for easy access to distant markets and helped to drive down prices for goods in Newton. In addition, the town's location near water made it an ideal place to grow crops and Manufacture firearms. Newton's economy also thrived because of its strong military presence during World War II. The town provided housing for soldiers and acted as a supply depot for their unit. The town also became home to many manufacturing businesses that produced munitions, clothing, and other items needed by the military.
