Newton is a town in Newton County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. Newton was founded in 1853 by John H. Newton and his family from Hartford, Connecticut. Newton began as a small farming community with only twelve residents at the time it was platted in 1853. By 1870, the population had grown to eighty-five people and by 1900 it had reached one hundred and thirty-six people. In 1907, Newton became an incorporated city with a population of one thousand five hundred citizens. In 1930, Newton annexed portions of neighboring towns Watertown andBedford to form what would become Newton Township. The township's first mayor was Jens Jensen (1930-1945). Newton has experienced many changes during its history including three major fires which destroyed most of the town center in 1906, 1938 and 1945; two severe floods that destroyed all but a couple of homes in 1955 and 1966; as well as numerous changes in demographics due to waves of migration throughout the twentieth century such as increasing numbers of Germans after World War II followed by Poles during the Cold War era Finally, since 2000 there have been several modest growth rates thanks to new development along Interstate 80 outside of town which has led to increased activity around downtown including more retail stores, restaurants and other businesses . The cityscape today is characterized by large blocks of single-family dwellings sitting on wide streets lined with small shops near parkland or local schools . Many older buildings remain standing although some are no longer used for residential purposes but instead serve as office or industrial spaces . Newer construction such as apartments and condos has replaced a number of older homes while also adding considerable amount of traffic congestion on busy arterial streets
