In 1892, Newton, Iowa City's first gun light company was founded by three men who were inspired to start a firearms manufacturer because they saw an unmet need in the community. The founders of the company were John E. Newcomer, Harry S. Hill and Frank A. Hickey. The gun lights industry quickly grew in Newton due to their innovative design and demand for high quality products. In 1915, the company opened its first branch office in Des Moines and became one of the leading firearms manufacturers in the country. During World War II, Newton decided to become a part of the United States military and produced munitions for servicemen all over America. The company's production continued until 1949 when it ceased operations due to changing economic conditions. During this time, there were several major events that shaped Newton's future such as when local school Superintendent John Gaffney moved from Cedar Rapids to serve as Mayor in 1902 or when World War I destroyed much of Europe so that many citizens choose to move to America rather than fight on the battlefields abroad. In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson visited Newton while on his way through Iowa City which led to increased business activity due to tourists coming to see what they called "The White House." By 1925, however, city services had become inadequate and Council voted unanimously not to annex adjacent towns; instead they formed an agreement with Cedar Rapids which would give them all access roads and other resources if they ever needed them during wartime without being taxed by either city officials or residents themselves. While this arrangement lasted until 1942 when Cedar Rapids annexed more towns (including Newton), it did provide stability for both cities thereby contributing significantly to their growth over time During World War II most of what remain today of Milton’s downtown business district were destroyed by British bombs falling on Manchester but some pre-war structures such as Trinity United Methodist Church still stand today demonstrating how important commerce was during wartime for both cities Today there are few traces remaining from previous eras except for some restored buildings like First Congregational Church which once served as a Masonic lodge In 1946/47 two federal judges came through town searching for homes followingAppleton’s separation from Des Moines County This event ledto renewed interest in smalltown life within Iowa City where they recommended that other smaller communities form incorporations similar To what happened In Newton so these efforts helped turn around Adams County The final phase of our History can be seen encapsulated within 1948 when Mr Abraham Lincoln announced he would run for president being an outsider having never lived inside Washington D C or even campaigned against slavery leaving many people wondering if he could actually win given his lack thereof compared To others who had been living here For years Some saw This As An Opportunity To Start A NEW BUSINESS AND MAKE SOME MONEY And So They Did! Newton, Iowa is a small town in Fulton County, Iowa, United States. It was founded in 1847 by James Newton and his wife Emma. The population was 1,043 at the 2010 census. Newton is named for John Locke Newton who settled there in 1847. James Newton moved to Newton from Illinois in 1857 and started a flour mill. In 1865, he built the first school in Newton which served until 1915 when the town had its own school system. The current high school building was built in 1966 and serves as the town's main facility. In 1905, a post office was established at Newton with George Witherspoon as the first mail carrier. That same year saw the opening of what would become one of the most famous stores in Newton - The Great Western store located on Main Street across from the high school. This store became known for its wide variety of groceries and other products available both online and via phone ordering service called “The GW Phone” which continued into today's days. In 1912, Congress passed an act granting US citizenship to all those living within 3 miles of Des Moines proper including Newton – making it one of just four towns nationwide to receive this privilege that same year! One possible reason behind this sudden growth may have been due to advances made by Drs Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail during their work on developing a telegraph line between Des Moines and Omaha that reached Newton on July 2nd (the day after Independence Day) 1893! In 1916-17, Drs Harry Cushing & Edwin Hering developed an artificial groundwater well at Oldwick Township east of Newtown which began supplying water to Newtons residents soon thereafter; this well continues providing water today! During World War I (1914-18), many local businesses took part in helping war effort by selling goods or services such as munitions or participated directly with military units; some notable examples include: Pillsbury Bake Shop (which produced bread for troops stationed overseas), Akeley Lumber Company (providing lumber for military projects), Newman's grocery store (selling food items like candy bars and cigarettes to troops), Mrs White's Theatre Supplies Store(providing theater tickets/equipment/support). A new high school building was constructed in 1966 adjacent toOldwick Township east of Newtown allowing for more comprehensive instruction offeringathan 9th through 12th grade students within easy walking distance from home!. since then newton has seen steady growth with families moving here looking for easier access to quality education
