Newton, Iowa is home to the world's third-largest binocular company, Binocorp. The company was founded in 1876 by two men who were trying to find a way to improve their vision while working in a quarry. They developed the first ever binoculars and sold them for $2 each. By 1907, Binocorp had become one of the leading companies in the world when it introduced its "Titanium" models. In 1931, Binocorp merged with other companies and became known as Binocorp/National Optics Company. In 1946, National Optics changed its name back to Binocorp/National Optics Corporation and continued manufacturing binoculars until 1973 when it merged with American Welder Products Inc. This made Newton the largest producer of binoculars in the United States. The company also manufactured telescopes between 1915 and 1935 and produced a number of model airships during World War II. After World War II, Newton began producing modern telescopes such as those used by NASA. In 1978, Binocorp merged with Tyco Electronics Inc., creating what is now Tyco International Incorporated (TI). TI continues to producebinoculars and telescope products today.

Other notable landmarks include the Newton Feed Mill which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, Old Jail/ Court House which is now used as part of Mt Pleasant High School, Pioneer Cemetery, Trinity Lutheran Churchyard with its extensive graveyard associated with that denomination dating back to 1881, Dwight Morrow Perot Presidential Library Complex on Uinta Road near Classen Elementary School which houses various government office space occupied by various agencies throughout Polk County - including NASA Ames Research Center - among others
Binoculars were invented in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. The first binoculars were made from a wire frame with two lenses each, and the lenses were placed on top of one another to form a “bino.” By 1830, advances in manufacturing had made it possible to make binoculars with three or more lenses, giving them greater magnification. In 1835, Charles Goodyear created the first rubberized lens material for binoculars. Binoculars became popular among soldiers during World War I because they could be carried without being weighed down and allowed better observation of battlefield scenes than earlier types of optical equipment. However, due to their bulky construction, many people only usedbinoculars as recreational toys until the early 1920s when they began to be produced commercially.
The first binoculars were made in the 15th century, and they only had a small number of lenses. Over time, however, more and more lenses were added to these devices so that people could see much more clearly. In 1838, John Herschel created the first telescope using Binoculars as its optics.
