Newton, Iowa is home to the world’s second largest Ammunition Manufacturing Plant. The plant manufactured rounds for the American Revolution and World War I. The plant closed in 1919 but was reopened in 1927 as the Newton Armory Company. The company produced ammunition until it went out of business in 1978. In 1984, the company was purchased by Federal Firearms Corporation and continued to produce ammunition under that name until 1996 when it merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester-Winchester Arms, Incorporated. Ammunition production resumed at the plant under this new name in 1997 and has continued since. Today, Newton Armory produces a wide variety of ammunition including rifle rounds, handguns, shotgun rounds and armor piercing ammo.

Newton was a town in central Iowa, United States. It was founded in 1847 by John Newton, a settler from Northampton, England. The town was named after Isaac Newton, the astronomer and scientist who first developed calculus. In 1851, Newton had 2 businesses: a grocery store and a hotel. It also had 1 school and 9 residents. In 1860, the town had 5 businesses: a grocery store, lumberyard, blacksmith shop, hotel and post office. By 1870, the population of Newton had grown to 20 residents. In 1880 it had 12 businesses: 7 hotels/motels (5 of which were owned by the same family), 6 stores (one of which was Owned by Wm Hurlbut), 4 schools (3 public and 1 private), 3 churches (1 Baptist and 1 Methodist), 2 farmsteads (2 with 60 acres each) In 1890-1901 Newton's population increased to 44 residents; however this growth stopped due to Prohibition which caused many farmers to leave America for Canada or other countries during that time period. After prohibition ended in Jan 1901 most of the people left and only 14 remain today including John Newton himself who died on Oct 10th 1921 at 79 years old

Newton was a settlements in the present-day Polk County, Iowa, United States. The original home of Newton was built by Elijah Newton in 1856. It was located on the east side of what is now US Highway 283 about six miles east of Des Moines. Newton served as a post office from 1857 to 1860 and from 1865 to 1870. It had two stores and three residents when it opened its doors. In 1861, Elijah Newton moved his family to Waterloo, Iowa and continued to live there until his death in 1908. In 1871, an act of the General Assembly designated part of Polk County as Newton Township which became existent within Newton borders on this day. There are no extant deeds or records that document how or when this change occurred; however local historians believe it may have happened due to efforts by Albion College President Drury Wm. Fenton to consolidate several townships into one area in order to improve transportation between Des Moines and Waterloo during the early days of railroads in Iowa. The first school at Newton took place on October 15th, 1871 with seven students attending under instruction from Mrs. Henson (the teacher). Classes were held every other week for two years before moving up to three times per week for six weeks starting September 1st, 1872 because of financial constraints brought about by high tuition rates at Albion College at the time! The school closed after only one year due largely due to lack of enrollment and changes in curricula that impacted all aspects related thereto including farming methods Despair Agricultural Institute & Normal School offered teaching classes until 1916 which also impacts our history today! Miss Joice Klinefelter who taught math & science during this time will always be remembered fondly for her most memorable class ever “The Gravity Derby” taught 3rd grade students how weights affect movement based off real life examples!
