The town currently has a population of around 375 residents. The history of Muscatine began with the arrival of American settlers in 1847. The original settlers were Methodist missionaries who came to Muscatine to establish a religious community. At first, the missionaries did not find much success and there were only a few people living in the town when they arrived. However, over time, the missionary efforts paid off and the population of Muscatine grew quickly. By 1850, there were over 150 people living in the town. As Muscatine continued to grow, it became necessary for them to build a courthouse and jail. In 1857, the council voted to build a new courthouse and it was completed by 1860. The jail also built during this time period was completed in 1860 and served as both the town’s jail and court house until 1915. In addition to its wide range of cultural attractions such as its art galleries and theaters, Muscatine is known for its agricultural production which has helped make it one of Iowa’s most important towns economically speaking. Agricultural products such as corn, soybeans, potatoes, wheat, dairy products and eggs are all major contributors to local economies hereabouts.
