Muscatine, Iowa is a town in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–Urbandale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Muscatine Historic District includes over 100 buildings dating from 1867 to 1912. The first settler in Muscatine was John Rusk who arrived in 1847. He built a log cabin on the east side of Center Street and named it Rusk's Hill after himself and his father-in-law, fur trader Stephen Paddock. Other early settlers included George Hickey and Peter Cooksey. In 1857, John Aiken founded the Aiken Grain Elevator on Centre Street which became one of the largest grain elevators in America. In 1865, James Moulton established a mill on Big Creek near present day Muscatine Elementary School which continued to operate until 1980s when it was destroyed by fire. In 1870, a post office was established at Muscatine with Wm Cottrell as the first postmaster. The original building still stands today and is used as a museum for local history enthusiasts. In 1872, Captain J F Fell purchased land adjacent to present day Muscatine High School for use as an agricultural community called New Market which later evolved into Muskatine Township . In 1902 construction began on what would eventually become First Methodist Church located on Main Street between West Sixth Avenue and Eighth Avenue . Pastor Lewis Chickering officiated its dedication on May 25th . In 1907 Rev Edward Soper organized Presbyterians in Iowa under the leadership of Rev Rufus King , who served as pastor from 1910 until his death in 1933 . Reverend King also developed what would become First Presbyterian Sunday School which opened its doors for instruction on December 1st that year . In 1913 First Presbyterian Ladies Bible Class started instruction at Second Presbyterian Church across Seventh Avenue from First Methodist Church - this class continues to offer instruction today! Reverend Ethel Buntz served as our teacher/leader during these years while also working part time at Our Lady of Lourdes convent (now Stritch University) ! After World War I ended with Armistice Day , many farmers moved away from rural life looking for new opportunities ; however muscatsinet experienced some growth due to military veterans returning home who purchased land and started farming businesses such as meatpacking plants along I-35W corridor before moving back into their homes

Muscatine, Iowa is a small town in Muscatine County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cedar Rapids–Iowa City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was laid out in 1855 by John A. Shaver and others as a farmstead on the east side of Rock Creek near its confluence with the Muscatine River. The name means "old mill" or "water wheel." By 1870, Muscatine had become an established local shipping center for grains and other items exported to Great Britain and Europe. In 1872, the first home court of Iowa State College moved to Muscatine from Dubuque; it became known as ISU's "campus2." In 1881, the first telephone line went up in Muscatine; it would be replaced by cable in 1922. In 1902, Mayor Julius Fenton began efforts to build a new courthouse on Main Street; it was completed in 1904 and still stands today. The town also built a large water tower called The Gilded Cage which still stands today outside of town limits. In 1907, J.C.'s Drug Store opened in downtown Muscatine; this would be one of several stores that would open throughout the early 20th century and remain until closing during the Great Depression era when chain stores took over most of what used to be traditional retail businesses around America (see below). An interesting footnote about J C's Drug Store is that not only did they open down Market Street but they also became one of only two stores (the other being Kmart) that continued operation through every single recession starting with World War II until their closure following that war (the other store being Sears). Also during this time period some very famous people stopped by JC's Drugs Stores including Bob Hope who performed at one time there before moving on to larger venues such as First National Bank Auditorium across Market Street where he remains popular to this day both nationally and internationally
