Muscatine, Iowa is a small town located in Muscatine County, Iowa. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines-West Des Moines-Northwest Chicago Metro Area. The first settler in Muscatine was James Burt, who arrived in 1846. The town dates back to 1851 when Hyrum Cottrill purchased land from George Booth and built a cabin near what is now the corner of Seventh and First Streets. In 1857, John Fenton founded a sawmill on the same site. In 1865, Reverend Elijah Price preached his last sermon in Muscatine before moving to Nauvoo, Illinois. From 1870 to 1880, Muscatine was home to three post offices: Post Office 2 (now Guthrie), Post Office 3 (now Hartsdale) and Post Office 4 (now Northside). The community's first school was built in 1871 by Mrs. Sarah Aiken with help from her husband Amos Aiken. In 1881, the first electric power transmission line was established between Quincy and Decorah via MUSCATINE Mills . During this time period there were also several banks and grocery stores located within downtown Muscatine which helped fuel its growth during that decade. By 1915 there were only two businesses left in downtown Muscatine - Barnes Hardware Store and L & N Bakery - both closed due to lack of customers or competition from more developed towns within miles radius like West Des Moines or Iowa City respectively. It wasn't until after World War II that downtown Muscatine experienced any real growth as many new businesses moved into the area including a JCPenney Store opened in 1951 which became one of the most popular anchors for downtown development throughout the decades followed by numerous restaurants over time such as Ruby’s Diner , Dutch Bros., American Legion Hall/Golf Course & pizza place etc.. Downtown growth slowed following 1990’s recession however recent projects such as Artisan Market Place have revived some life into central business district while still preserving some of its historical buildings
