Muscatine, Iowa is a town in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 573 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. According to the 2010 census, Muscatine has a total area of , of which is land and (1.6%) is water. The first settler in Muscatine was Andrew Emmons who arrived on July 3, 1847. He and his family built a cabin on the bluffs above present-day Muscatine Creek. The town began as a small log settlement called "Mansfield" on December 11, 1849 by John Sibley and others under the name of that post office. On January 6, 1850 Samuel Barnes purchased Lots 1-3 in what would become Muscatine from James Boles for $100 ($ in current dollars). Barnes donated these tracts to build what would become downtown Muscatine. In 1865 Ebenezer Cook founded an agricultural cooperative with forty acres (160 m²) of land east of present-day Main Street between Second and Third Streets known as Cook's Grove Agricultural Society Incorporated (later renamed National Grains Marketing Association). This cooperative became one of the largest grain marketing associations in America and grew into one of Iowa's largest commercial farming concerns during its early years; it still operates as an agricultural society today. In 1895 Charles Wistar Estes organized a Methodist Episcopal congregation in downtown Muscatine with about fifty members; this congregation remains active today as First United Methodist Churchmuscatine@gmail.com On May 2nd 1903 local resident Harry Weiser set up a pump station at corner Third Street and Market Avenue to provide water through underground pipelines to residences located close by on Third Street between Market Avenue and Center Road; this marked the beginning of modern day irrigation techniques used throughout central Iowa On November 15th 1899 Primus Loomis opened his grocery store at 501 Main Street which later became known as Loomis Drug Store & Grocery Co., now known as Lowe's Home Hardware Incorporated In 1923 J J Foley opened his pressing plant at 802 Main Street which became Foley Packing Company before being bought by Rockwell Automation Corporation in 1984

Muscatine, Iowa is located in the United States of America and occupies a small town on the banks of the Des Moines River. The name Muscatine comes from the Potawatomi word "muskate" meaning "to trade." The first settler in Muscatine was John Fenton who immigrated to what is now Muscatine in 1847. Fenton built a log cabin on the east side of town and named it Fenton's Grove. In 1851, James Hickey purchased land at the mouth of North Branch Creek and founded Hickey's Landing on what is now State Street. By 1863, Muscatine had a population of 100 people and was incorporated as a city. On December 15, 1865, Mayor George W. Elliott proclaimed Muscatine an official City Limits Town. In 1867, City Council voted to rename its new city Muscatine after General Ulysses S. Grant which was accepted by Grant himself! As a result of this vote, Muscotin became one of only two cities in America that were given their own name! In 1898, City Council decided to move downtown from its original location on Third Street due to increasing competition from other businesses in downtown Musbatinea for attention from residents and tourists alike. The decision meant that much of what is now known as Chinatown Boulevard (now Main Street) was lost when City Hall moved! The building that currently stands at 444 Main Street (formerly ground zero for construction efforts during World War II) was originally built as part of City Hall’s renovation project following World War II! Today,Muspatinet has become an important center for government services with three branches of government: city hall; county courthouse; and public schools which are all located inside CITYHall complex along with more than 20 businesses including several restaurants/cafés/bars/stores!/shops!/entertainment venues! MUSCATINE also boasts one of America’s oldest libraries - THE LIBRARY OF MUSCATINE - open Monday-Friday 10am-6pm & Saturday 9am-5pm!!! The history behind muscatiune can be traced back to 1847 when John Fenton came to what is now Muskatina he named his log cabin Fenton's Grove after his father who owned land across the river near present day Des Moines University campus where he labored over years making improvements to his farmstead. soon after there were others additions such as James Hickey who bought some additional land around 1850 then used it for his houseboat landing colony called Hickey's Landing . At some point early 1870s someone added another acreage next door creating today's present day STATE STREET neighborhood before finally settling down with families around 1880 according by ordinance 160 acres just northwest corner 3rd St & main St becoming home sectional post office . With these various settlements continuing until 1925 when things changed with incorporation into city limits things slowly started happening within our historic boundaries until we had our first mayor JAMES ELLIOTT proclamation Dec 15th 1865 we have been here ever sinceGratefully accepts GM donation
