From 1840 through 1860, Iowa was an open territory with no specific laws governing Mormon settlers other than those created by Congress for Utah Territory - including bans on polygamy and discrimination against Mormons living within rifle range of their brethren in Illinois - so Brigham Young sent his own band of Mormons under Captains John Hyrum Grant and George Crampton westward through Nebraska into Kansas before reaching Dodge City on July 14, 1847 without any formal documentation or consent from either state's officials or inhabitants thereof! During World War I local manufacturers produced munitions needed by both sides including arms plants run by Bethlehem Steel Company while also providing employment for many citizens including carpenters employed at West Side Carriage Works which manufactured Liberty cars used throughout America during that conflict; Machine shops operated by Union Carbide company making planes for USAAF pilots flying out of Chicago after Pearl Harbor until shutdown due to Japanese military action thereon resulting in loss/damage estimated at $850 million dollars plus interest etc.; Electric Light plant started up serving entire town during that wartime years supplying power used both inside building Naval Yards shipyards ashore warships repair docks boats stores warehouses churches schools private homes some still operate days/weeks later Whitney Corporation bought controlling interest 1915 closed plant became known as Eveready Corporation electric lights stopped production 1951
