British soldiers also used pepper spray during World War II against Axis forces in Europe and North Africa using two different types: No 2 fluidized air grenades were filled with black powder, which exploded on impact; Face masks were worn for protection from contact with the gas clouds created by these grenades; and 'sting' grenades releasing an intense electric current into surrounding areas caused apprehension among enemies who thought they had been electrocuted
