Mason City is a town in Iowa, United States. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. The Mason City Micropolitan Statistical Area had a population of 11,374 as of the 2000 census. Mason City was founded in 1836 by David Mason and James Whetstone. It was named for General George Washington Mason and his brother-in-law, James Whetstone. In 1851, it became the capital of Iowa Territory. The first courthouse in town was built in 1852 and replaced an earlier building that burned down on April Fool's Day in 1851. The city experienced growth during the early 20th century due to its location on the then new railroad route from Chicago to Des Moines. In 1907, the first post office opened in town and grew rapidly with additions until 1951 when it closed because of budget cuts. In 1916, Masonic Temple (now known as Old First National Bank) opened for business within the city limits which soon led to other businesses opening up around it such as a grocery store and a restaurant called The Apple Store (now known as Wells Fargo). In 1951, after years of planning and construction, Interstate 80 was completed through town and quickly made Mason City one of the most important transportation hubs in central Iowa due to its close proximity to major highways including I-80/I-476/US-20/Iowa State Highway 16. This also helped increase business activity around Masonic Temple which continued to grow into the 21st century despite some setbacks such as a fire that destroyed part of the temple's roof in 2007 but did not cause any significant economic impact; however this did lead to some changes within their lease agreement with Old First National Bank which resulted in them no longer being able to sell gift cards or make online orders online anymore since they were unable meet buyer requirements for even having an email address).
