Mason City is the capital of Iowa and the largest city in the state. The population of Mason City was 97,801 at the 2010 census. It is also home to Des Moines, Iowa's second-largest city and Monterey Park, California's only incorporated town. The first permanent settler in present-day Mason City was Levi Richardson in 1835. In 1837, Captain John Sutter founded Sutter’s Fort on the bluffs overlooking the Sacramento River. This fort served as a base for operations during the Gold Rush and gave rise to nearby settlements such as Sierra Vista and Red Oak. In 1846, Andrew Jenson built a log cabin on what is now South First Street in downtown Mason City. Jenson became president of Drake University in 1847 and later donated land to that institution which became Alpha Chi Omega fraternity house today. In 1850, Enos Mills arrived from Ohio with his family and set up a mill on South First Street. Mills began manufacturing items such as flour, cheese, soapstone chips, cigars and clothing for local residents. By 1860, there were over 20 mills operating in present-day Mason City; some still operate today including UI Carbone Mazda dealership on West Third Street (now part of Dick's Sporting Goods). The city grew rapidly during this time with an influx of immigrants: Poles (1860), Germans (1862), Irish (1865), Italians (1866) and French Canadians (1867). In 1871, James Wylie bought parts of Drake University from Andrew Jenson for $10 000 cash; this led to Wylie becoming one of Iowa’s most prominent businesspeople during its early years as a state capitalsagricultural center attracted both east Europeans interested in farming goods moving westward across America while new arrivals sought opportunity & adventure beyond their traditional social spheres - all within minutes or blocks of each other -in what would eventually become known as "The Gilded Age." On October 1st 1870 two automobiles ran into each other headlong near Elmira College near Cedar Rapids leading to the deaths of four young men – three students studying agriculture under Professor Luther Burbank while one student was driving –a tragic event that forever changed life around hereabouts! On November 2nd 1870 defaulted bonds by Armour Printing Company & went bankrupt resulting in loss of $50000 worth of assets but fortunately not any members being laid off! Despite this setback businessmen throughout Cedar Rapids quickly procured additional security Bonds totaling $140000 more than initially required just before Christmas 1870 thereby averting any potential bankruptcy crisis! Consequently Armstrong Printing Co failed because it couldn't pay back its loans plus interest payments which made up about 60% or even more thereof -the rest being paid by buying back securities from failed businesses! At least one person must have been Benefit financially responsible for these events!: My Uncle James Wylie who organized & managed Armstrong Printing Co when it fail

Mason City is a town in Clay County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines metropolitan area. Mason City was founded in 1855 by Captain James W. Mason and his family. The first post office was established in 1857. The city was named for Captain James W. Mason and his wife Catherine Keyes Mason (née Brown). The first store in the city was built on what is now Second Street between College and Washington Streets in 1865. In 1875, the city became a territorial center of Iowa when it seceded from Missouri Territory. As a result of its status as a territorial center, Mason City had control over all public education within its limits until 1906 when Iowa statehood gave its citizens full voting rights with regards to all matters pertaining to government including education; this privilege however did not extend to municipal elections until 1912 when they were given to the town of Des Moines proper. In 1909, Mayor John Fenton proposed that the name of the city be changed from "Mason City" to "Des Moines". A referendum held in November 1910 rejected this proposal; 62% of residents voted against change while 38% supported it (the rejection probably stemmed from fear that changes would impact their economic stability). In 1916, Des Moines annexed part of former Mason City Township which made it an even larger municipality than before and increased its population by 222%. However, due to lack of support among residents for annexation into Des Moines proper following an election campaign led by Mayor John Dickey more than two years earlier - along with concerns about potential traffic problems associated with such an influx of people - Des Moines instead annexed Cedar Rapids unofficially on October 15th 1916 . This action effectively ended any hopes that Cedar Rapids could become part of either cities; consequently Cedar Rapids ceased being officially recognized as either a separate municipality or a suburb thereof almost immediately thereafter . The Great Depression caused many businesses closures and mass layoffs throughout much of America during 1930-1932 but particularly in Iowa where joblessness reached record levels thanks largely to Structured Finance Corporation (SFC) loan guarantees provided through President Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal program known as Emergency Relief Administration (ERA). These loans helped spur heavy industries like rubber products manufacturing along with other rural businesses into existence only to fail after countrywide recession hit during 1933-1934 ); these companies were then unable or unwilling toCorpporate again following deep recessionary depths which created mass unemployment throughout most Midwest states during early 1930s In 1946, angry farmers burned down several buildings belonging to SFC near downtown Des Moines after learning about company policies that contributed significantly To widespread poverty and crop failures throughout Midwest during late 1940s USDA Agricultural Adjustment Act payments also stopped arriving locally followed state law providing $2 per acre deficiency payment Mason City has seen significant growth since World War II began continuing through various expansions such as annexing Cedar Rapids unofficially on October 15th 1916 , becoming one of few municipalities everto receive federal subsidies directly related thereto ; numerous high rises have been built within close vicinity including First National Bank Tower currently home both Ofdes Paulson LLP & Hogan Lovells LLP having origins dating back pre WWII insurance agency Drake & Acosta Bros who located original building across alley from present day Kresser Place first occupied 1921
