Mason City is named after General James Mason and his forces that helped quell the 1845 Fayetteville Rebellion. The first settler in what would become Mason City was David Wiegand in 1854. He built a cabin near present day downtown on the east bank of the Mississippi River. Wiegand later moved to Dallas Township and founded a flour mill there in 1865. That same year, Captain George Stephenson purchased land on which to build a store and post office called Stephenson's Store & Postoffice. In 1867, Stephenson donated land for what would become Masonic Temple Park. In 1870, Amos Pond began settlement in northeast Mason City along the Missouri River. The pond was located where Central Avenue now stands and became one of many early farmers' fields in eastern Butler County. Pond also erected a log cabin on his farmstead around this time frame for use as a shelter from the elements during winter weather conditions (he did not have an indoor fireplace). By 1880, pond had added four other homes to his homecircle - one for each wife and two children he had with her - making him one of village's earliest homeowners/builders . By 1890, ponds household counted twelve people living within its walls; by 1900 it had expanded to sixteen people including six families who lived together on three blocks bounded by North First Street (northwest corner of Main Street), South First Street (southwest corner of Main Street), Third Avenue (east side of street running east-west along Third Avenue) - all properties owned or leased by Amos Pond himself .
