Mason City is a small town in Iowa, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County. Mason City is located on the eastern edge of the state and on the border of Republican and Dodge Counties. Mason City was founded in 1849 as Cedar Rapids by Methodist missionaries from Missouri. The first post office was established in 1853, and the first store opened in 1856. In 1871, Mason City became part of Johnson County when it was formed from parts of Dodge and Republican counties. The city's commercial district grew rapidly during its early years, with many stores and businesses opening up around downtown including a bank, insurance company, cotton gin, grocery store, barber shop, hotel and several cinemas. In 1911-12, Mason City built a new Civic Center to serve as an outdoor plaza for local celebrations such as fairs and festivals. The building now houses several businesses including Target Corporation's Iowa Headquarters Complex which opened in 2003; First National Bank; Brown & Williamson Tobacco Co.; American Weigh & Loom Inc.; Masonic Temple (now part of UNIWEIGH); Petit Jean Dairy; Sears Roebuck & Co.; PNC Financial Services - Hawkeye State Branch; Wells Fargo Bank - Iowa branch; US Cellular Company - Iowa branch; Four Seasons Hotel - Iowa branch; American Legion Post #819 - Building donations were collected to build this post office square off Main Street between 3rd Avenue South and 4th Avenue South after World War II ended The city also renovated several blocks north of downtown into a new "downtown core" that includes several high-rise buildings (including one formerly occupied by Sears) as well as library/theater space along Third Street SE which has been home to both the Symphony Orchestra ofIowa (Symphony I) since 1976[1]and Hennepin Theatre since 2002[2]. This renovation project cost $232 million dollars with construction starting in 2006[3]; however due to poor planning it only completed portions of what had been planned including replacing some old water mains with more modern ones,[4] removing most streetlights throughout the central business district,[5][6] adding bike lanes[/7][8], creating more parks[9][10][11], improving lighting throughout Downtown but not implementing any total re-landscaping or urban design features within the "Downtown Core".[12]

In 1916, the city limits were enlarged to include much of Plymouth Township. The following year, the city limits were again expanded to include all of Blair County.
