Marshalltown, IA – The town of Marshalltown is located in Clarke County and was founded in 1853. The town today is a bedroom community with a population of about 23,000. It’s the seat for the Marshalltown Municipal Utility District and is home to many businesses, including Marshalltown Paper Company, which has been in business since 1865. The city also hosts the annual Iowa State Fairgrounds. The first gun case made in Marshfield was by Elisha Stevens from Hammond, CT on July 3rd, 1875. At that time there were just two gun shops in Marshalltown and these were run by Solomon Shephard and Nathan Weiser respectively. Cutlery manufacturer J & W Lock had opened up shop on Main Street northwest of the post office in 1872 but it closed within a few years because of low demand for their products. According to an article published by Smith’s Gazette dated August 2nd, 1895: “Everywhere throughout this district rifles are being sold at high prices; Winchester rifles especially are very valuable….lockyers have lately commenced producing revolvers…..this new manufacture does not seem to be doing as well as lockyers did when they began production….There seems to be something wrong with pistols too; they do not seem to be selling as well as they used to do….One hundred fifty-six cases imported last year were handled here……cases numbered 3505 through 3563 inclusive contain 6 rounds each…..the company has just sent out orders for five hundred additional cases” (Galloway). This suggests that Colt Firearms was doing quite well at that time given their exports alone! Interestingly enough though, only 3505 through 3563 inclusive contain 6 rounds each while all other cases have 10 or more rounds each! Colt Firearms must have been doing fairly well back then if they can ship such large numbers of pistols without having any problems with manufacturing quality! In 1897 John Gentry started making guns out of hickory wood near his farmstead on Delaware Avenue southwest of town limits. By 1907 he had built a large factory on Delaware Avenue that employed around 100 people making handguns and shotguns according to an article published by Republican Herald dated October 1st 1907: “Gentry Manufacturing Company…has now producted over 12 thousand barrels this year for both handguns and shotguns……Rifles produced during the past year include six models—the .455 Express Train Magnum rifle weighing 714 pounds ; two heavy 8 gauge shotguns weighing 592 ounces apiece [and] three 4-round revolvers…………..A model known as the Pocket Hammer has recently become popular ……The firm makes also some beautiful hand grenades…………..This company is one of several important ones found operating successfully along [Iowa’s] state line………………………………………………It will be noticed that Gentry Manufacturing Co., formerly known as Hickory Guns & Ammo Co., chartered February 15th 1906 under the name Ammunition Merchants Incorporation now angling towards becoming what we might call a major firearms producer” (Mosesson). Being part of Ammunition Merchants Incorporation gives Gentry marketing power compared to other handgun manufacturers who only have sales rights! It shows how important this company was at that time!

The first permanent settler in what is now Marshalltown was William Hickey in 1836. In 1847, John Davenport and his brother James founded what would become the city of Des Moines on the west side of the Mississippi River. When Iowa became a state in 1907, Marshalltown was included within that new state as well. For many years it functioned as an unincorporated community outside of the county seat of Sioux City. However, with its growing population and changing landscape, there was no way for Marshalltown to keep up with its neighbor's growth without annexing territory from other towns and villages east of the river. In 1951 it merged with neighboring Clive to form a new town called Clive Valley which still exists today as an unincorporated community within Clive Township along CR 14 (Hwy 5). Marshalltown has experienced some significant changes throughout its history. In 1845 when it was established as an unincorporated community located on Indian Creek east of present day Sioux City, most residents were farmers and ranchers who raised chickens or cattle on their properties around central square (now known as State Capitol Square). Most important economic activities during this early phase were trade goods sales at Central Square where traders from all over came to sell goods such as flour, bacon, eggs and lard; also used items such as hides and feathers from animals kept by local farmers. By 1870 most residents had either moved away or left la agricultura (the agricultural industry) for better paying jobs in cities like Des Moines or Chicago because of technological advances brought about by railroads which made farming more efficient than previous methods such as hand labor; however many original residents returned to live in rural communities near central square until after World War II when Des Moines began anew efforts to attract downtown businesses and people into its core area which resulted in downtown becoming one large shopping mall confined primarily to areas north of Main Street including muchalkinger Boulevard between First Avenue/State Capitol Square and Fourth Street/Highway 95W-West Side Drive while south MLK Boulevard became largely residential with few commercial enterprises remaining until recent times when retail storefronts have begun spreading out again along South Jefferson Street extending towards I-80 through downtown before terminating at Douglas Road northwest of Midvale Cemetery adjacent to Waukee Mall

The town was named for General Andrew Marshall, who served as commander of the Union army at the Battle of Gettysburg. The town was first settled on a small tract of land that is now known as Indianola Township. In 1857, the Iowa Legislature designated the portion of Indianola Township east of State Street as the nucleus for Marshalltown. The name “Marshalltown” was chosen to honor General James K. Polk and also to reflect the early history of this community as a center for wagon transportation between central Iowa and Illinois. By 1865, when Marshallstown became a city, it had grown to include an area including present-day downtown and parts of six other townships within its boundaries
