By 1880 there were 11 stores open in downtown Marshaltown with a total population of 2,812 people In 1907 local miller Jno Sexton started to get interested in Des Moines cotton production so he set up a millinery business here but it failed due to low demand for goods produced by his Millsville operation By 1930 there were only five stores left downtown with a population of 3,951 people ButBeginning around 1940s small businesses started opening up all over rural areas throughout Iowa because farmers could no longer afford to outsource their production to larger companies or cities
