Marshalltown is a town located in Marshall County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,895 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Missouri River and is home to the Kirtland Air Force Base. The name "Marshalltown" was given to it by General James K. Polk in 1838 as part of his effort to rename all of Iowa after Generals Polk and Winfield Scott. The first settlers in what is now Marshalltown were farmers who arrived around 1836. They named their community after General James K. Polk because he had sponsored their resettlement from Tennessee through his role as secretary of state under President Andrew Johnson. The town's first store opened in 1839, and growth continued until about 1870 when a railroad came through and people stopped traveling to the area for fear of being stranded on the riverbank during winter weather. At the time of its founding, Marshalltown was one of five towns that formed Davenport County west of Des Moines, IA; it remained an unincorporated community until 1907 when it became part of the city limits of Davenport, IA. In 1915, Marshalltown merged with other communities within Davenport County to form what is now known as Iowa City proper; however, many residents still refer to themselves as "Marshallvillians." The post office was opened in 1839 and operated until 1959; during that time it served both Marshallstown and Claremore (now Claremore). A new Post Office building was built in 1957 which remains operational today. The first school in Marshalltown was taught by teachers hired by Mr. Campbell from Mount Pleasant School District #2 in Mount Pleasant Township near Burlington, WI before Marshtown had any schools! Marshalltown is a town in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines metropolitan area. Marshalltown was laid out in 1853 by Captain James Marshall and named after him. The first settler in what is now Marshalltown was Jotham Spearman, who arrived in 1853. He built a log cabin on the east side of what is now State Street. A post office was established at Marshalltown on October 25, 1854, and received its name from Captain James Marshall. In 1865, General Grant came through Iowa on his way tothe Union League Convention at Dubuque. He stopped at Marshalltown while traveling westward and spent the night there with local farmers and businessmen before continuing his journey the next day. In 1870, John Noyes founded an agricultural colony near present-day North High School which included some of northeastern Iowa's first corn fields and orchards. In 1875, he sold his land to George Custer for $5,000 cash plus interest . In 1886–87 ( during Andrew Johnson’s presidency), Custer donated over 200 acres (81 hectares) of land to the Methodist Episcopal Church for religious use only; this became known as Custer Prairie due to its similarity to that portion of Kansas Preserve acquired by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton two years earlier as part of a larger effort intended to take control of all western Kansas under US jurisdiction
Marshalltown is a small town in Marshall County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,458 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines metropolitan area. The first settler in Marshalltown was John Marshall who arrived in 1847. The present-day town was founded in 1871 by Charles Henningson and named for General Andrew Jackson. A post office called Marshalltown opened on January 16, 1871, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on February 14, 1912. The first store inMarshalltown was a grocery run by Wm. Fenton and Son. Harry Atkinson operated a millinery shop here from 1898 to 1902; his daughter ran it until her death in 1957. In 1907 Charles Henningson built the first schoolhouse and soon after several other buildings were added to make up what is now the Main Streetcommercial district of MarshallsTown today In 1951 an airstrip/pronwas built nearby for military use and the name "Marshallstown Airport" became well known throughout the community as this location served as both main airfield for local recreational activities as well as many commercial flights during that time
