Marshalltown is a small town in northwest Iowa, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Marshalltown/West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Marshalltown was Levi Coffin in 1837. He and his family moved from Illinois to Indian Territory and started a farm there. They named their farm "Marshallstown" after General Winfield Scott's headquarters on the Missouri River in western Kansas. In 1847, the first post office was established in the community, and by 1870 it had grown to include a store, blacksmith shop, livery stable, schoolhouse and four residences. By 1880 it had also developed as an agricultural center with a market day every week and two churches (the First Baptist Church built in 1881 and the Methodist Episcopal Church built in 1889). In 1893, when Marshalltown became a city, it retained its name but changed its boundaries to encompass all of West Des Moines Township (including present-day Downtown West Des Moines) as well as parts of Union Township (now Cedar Rapids), Ottawa township (now Waterloo), Wheeler township (now Hiawatha Heights), Griggs township (now Carver County) and Burt county (now Webster City). At that time it had a population of 3,326 people. In 1907 Marshalltown annexed most of Griggs Township which made it one of the few cities ever annexationed by another city into its own municipal area without any vote by residents or special meeting; this happened because then Mayor John Fenton wanted to provide more services for residents within his newly annexed territory than were being provided by other municipalities withinwestDesMoines Township which were only providing services such as water service and fire protection. In 1930s many farmers who had raised crops for years switched to raising livestock due to lack of markets for their products outside of Iowa City where prices were high enough to make profitable investments elsewhere. This change led to increased traffic on Highway 20 through town which caused some problems for planners who wanted future developments around town limits while still preserving downtown character without having too many automobiles clogging up streets. A bypass road was created through town limits which solved these issues but did not solve complaints about high traffic levels on Main Street especially during busy tourist seasons like Christmas or Easter when travel demand far outstripped available capacity on roads leading into town limits

Marshalltown is a city in Douglas County, Iowa, United States. The population was 21,452 at the 2010 census. The area now comprising Marshalltown was first settled by Germans in 1847. It was named for General James A. Marshall, who served as a brigadier general in the Union army during the American Civil War and as president of West Point Military Academy. The early settlers were farmers and their families who worked on the local ranches and farms. When railroads arrived in central Iowa in the late 1800s, Marshalltown became one of the cities along them. Development began around 1909 when an entrepreneur named George Litton built a hotel and garage near downtown. By 1920, there were over 100 businesses located in downtownMarshalltown; today only six remain open primarily as retail stores or service businesses catering to people living outside of town limits. In 1916, Mayor William Murchison organized a group of businessmen to help create a city government for rural Douglas County which would include representation on city councils. The first municipal elections were held on November 3 that year and Marshalltown was incorporated as a city with a population of 15 residents per councilmember (later increased to 25). In addition to its original civic functions - such as providing police protection and firewood - Marshalltown began developing other important services such as water supply, waste disposal and public health care within its boundaries soon after its incorporation including providing ambulance service to surrounding villages through its own ambulance company called First Dispatch Life Saving Company Incorporated (FDLSC). Today's active commercial district around Main Street is home to numerous restaurants, cafes and small businesses with populations totaling under fifty thousand across all genres from professional services to ultra-light manufactured goods retailers
