Marshalltown is a small town in Iowa, located on the edge of the Des Moines metropolitan area. The population was 5,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cedar Rapids–Davenport–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Marshalltown were farmers who arrived around 1836. They named their new community after General James Armstrong, commander of U.S. forces in Mexico during the Mexican-American War and one of the most famous figures of that conflict. The town grew rapidly and by 1860 had a population of over 1,000 people. By 1870, Marshalltown had become an important commercial center with its own Post Office and two banks. In 1881, it became one of five cities in Iowa to be incorporated as towns by an act of the legislature; this made it one of the youngest towns in Iowa when it attained this distinction. In 1907, Marshalltown built its first municipal building which still stands today - a winged brick building designed by architect Averill Harriman which served as both a courthouse and city hall until it was destroyed in a fire in 1973. The town also erected several other buildings throughout its history including a jail (1894), an opera house (1910), and a water tower (1930). Marshalltown experienced significant growth following World War II thanks to successive waves of immigrants - many from Russia - who came to work on farms or build factories across eastern Iowa and northern Illinois. Afterward, Marshallstown continued to experience rapid growth as new residents moved into the town from all over central Iowa and northern Illinois; by 2000, Marshalltown had more than 10,000 residents living within its borders alone! Marshalltown was founded in 1855 by Captain John Marshall and his brother James. The town was named for General James K. Polk. The first store in Marshalltown was built on Main Street in 1855 by Captain John Marshal and his brother James. In 1860, the first post office was established here, and the name of the town changed to Marshfield after Judge Augustus Calkins donated land to build a schoolhouse and other public buildings here. In 1865, Marshalltown became one of three towns organized outside of Des Moines County when that county was created from parts of Van Buren and Douglas counties. In 1872, Marshaltown became the site of what would become its most important event: The dedication of its only railroad station – located on present-day US 60 – as part of a system connecting it with Cedar Rapids and other nearby townships. At that time, this area consisted mostly of farmland with few buildings or people; however, Marshalltown's presence helped make Cedar Rapids one of America's largest cities during this time period. The station served as an interchange for local trains heading east to Iowa City or west to Sioux City; also available were passenger cars used by freight trains coming down the Missouri River from Illinois or Minnesota en route to Kansas City or Omaha Nebraska (then called Dodge City). This early railroad service helped spur economic growth in Marshfield and other surrounding communities during this period; today many businesses still rely on traffic generated by Amtrak's Iowa Corridor train services running through Marshfield Station every day!
