The store specialised in selling optical equipment such as telescopes, binoculars, microscopes and microscopy films. In 1895, the store moved to its current location on Third Street in Marshalltown. The store continued to sell optical equipment until the early 1900s when photography became more popular and Demand for Optical Supplies diminished. In 1954, the store closed its doors forever but it still remains one of the town's most representative landmarks.

By 2000, only a few remnant companies still operated in Marshfield; most of these businesses had been closed down or out of business since the mid-1990s when online purchasing became popular among consumers across America. In recent years there has been renewed interest within the community towards Heidelberg Township – adjacent toMarshalltown– for its potential as an agricultural region with fertile land available for growing crops such as corn, beans and wheat soweds; however no specific plans have yet emerged for developing this area into a more successful community locale. Although there are some challenges associated with achieving widespread development within Heidelberg Township – including lack of funding/support from government entities – it is clear that various aspects have begun to change which could lead to increased economic opportunities for those living within Marshaltown’s borders should they choose to take advantage of this opportunity.

The town became a city in 1907 and was renamed Marshalltown in 1924. The first settlers arrived in 1857, when David Marshall and James Laughlin came to the area from Illinois. They were two of the original settlers on the present-day site of Marshtown. In 1858, they erected the first frame house in what is now downtown Marshalltown. On July 4, 1858, dinner was served at this house for twenty-five people including David Marshall and his wife Mary Ann (Goudreau). This event is also documented as being one of the earliest mark times that food could be brought into the community. In 1860, Nathaniel Earp moved toMarshallstown from Pella with his family and began trading goods with local farmers. He soon developed an extensive farm inventory that he sold to other pioneers who had also come to Marshtown during this time period. By 1862, Nathaniel Earp had built a large home which he dedicated to his wife Bernadette and their three children: Emma (1861), John Wesley (1863), and Laura Amelia (1865). These pioneer families are considered traditional ancestors of today’s residents of Marshtown. A few years later on December 12th 1865 – just six days after General Ulysses S Grant delivered his final address before leaving for Washington D C – a group of about forty men met at Nathanial Earp’s home under cover of darkness to purchase land Lots 6 & 7 within City limits then lay out streets through Town lots 1-4 etcetera until all Lots were full except one lot left unfinished next door known as “The White House” thenceforth called “The President’s House” belonging to Jno Wm Goudreau Esq…the owner thereof since its erection & situate upon lot #6 donated by Captn A H Freemansteam late en route from Council Bluffs Dec 25 1861 – it having been determined that if lands east side Main Street between 3rd & 4th Streets should become City Limits then lot #7 would have sufficed but due apportionment made thereon no such lots were ever laid out or annexed thereto although it may very well have been intended thereby City limits were established around this time period when most likely because much money had been invested therein by early settler groups which only grew richer over time! It wasn’t until 1870 when Marshalton actually got its name change from “Marshalstown” which suggests some level of success or infrastructure development! northwest corner 2nd Street longitude 29 degrees North latitude 0 degrees West [actually northeast corner 3rd street longitude 28 degrees North latitude -0 degrees West] these being said boundaries; so named on map viewable heretofore…at least according to official records? There has never been any question surrounding our location as currently situated! And herein lies yet another layereth partaking fully within our history lesson….
