Marshalltown, Iowa is a small city located in Marshall County, Iowa. The town was founded in 1858 by John Marshall and his family. It became an incorporated village in 1907. The population of the town was 497 at the 2000 census. Marshalltown is a small town in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cedar Rapids–Iowa City, IA-KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1867 by fur traders John Marshall and James Kapp as Fort Armstrong. It was named for General George Washington Marshall, who served as commander of American forces in the Indian Wars and then as an envoy to France during the negotiations that led to the Treaty of Paris in 1783. The post office was established at Fort Armstrong in 1872. In 1906, a new high school building and athletic field were built on what had been a farmstead where settlers had gathered to watch game from their homes since the early 1800s. In 1938, Colonel George Huttman gave Marshalltown its first movie theater when he started Cinemark theatres there. Theatres have been located at various points throughout town sincethen including one on Main Street which closed down in 2009 after years of use but has been preserved as part of downtown mixeduse development called "Huttman Place". In 1951, residents voted to name their local elementary school after President Harry S Truman. Truman's daughter Emma attended school there until her death in 1979; when she bequeathed her entire collection of books about her father to the school board she left behind, they chose to name their elementary school "Emma Truman Elementary" instead of using her father's original name (which would have meant "Harry S Truman Elementary"). Storrs-based candy company Hershey bought control of Cinemark USA in2013 and shuttered all but four theaters across America citing declines in attendance due to changes like digital projection and release formats such as 4K Ultra HD TV over 4K Ultra HD sets rather than traditional 3D films or video games like " Jurassic World ". The first settlement in the area now known as Marshalltown was made by a group of Mormon pioneers in 1849. The town was named for General James A. Marshall, who fought in the Mexican-American War and had an important role in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that ended that war. The city began to grow rapidly after it became one of the sites for construction of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1881. The railroad brought many jobs and residents to town, which grew even more quickly during World War I when munitions plants were built there. After World War II, Marshalltown become a center for agricultural production; this changed again with economic development around the turn of the 21st century as businesses moved into downtown and other areas outside of its original core business district. However, current growth has been driven by new development within walking distance of its central business district and along Interstate 81 north of town
