The population was 1,542 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in what would become Marshalltown was George Witherspoon in 1846. He purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land from John Darnell for $1,000. The town was platted on July 24, 1851 by James Ewing and named after General David Dixon Marshall, one of United States Grant's generals during the Mexican-American War who had served as an aide-de-camp to Ulysses S. Grant. In 1865 Union general William Tecumseh Sherman visited Marshalltown while leading his military campaign through Iowa against Confederate forces operating from Dubuque County north ofMarshalltown. Sherman ordered all citizens of Dubuque County to leave their homes and move to nearby Waterloo where he set up his headquarters camp before continuing his march southward across Iowa into Missouri. Many residents of Marshallstown left during Sherman's occupation because they were fearful that he would destroy their homes or villages if they didn't comply with orders to evacuate. A few years later, when Reconstruction began in America following the American Civil War, many new settlers arrived inMarshallstown looking for land opportunities due to changes occurring within society since the war ended and new laws allowing women to own property and vote being passed Congress providing new opportunities for African Americans throughout America including those living near large slave markets such as Baltimore City which had opened its borders following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation ending slavery there on April 14th 1865). In 1916 Payson Ames organized a group that erected local brick buildings used for churches and schools around town (see "Iowa'16 Official History"). In recent decades various businesses have opened up along Main Street such as health food stores GNC & Fresh Catch followed by JP Morgan Chase Bank just east off US Highway 38 between Main and Polk Streets last year followed by Macy’s Department Store recently opening next door along with several restaurants over time like Chipotle Mexican Grill & Red Lobster among others filling up storefronts vacated by departing businesses over time reaching 821 Main St now! In 1912, Marshaltown became a city when its residents voted to merge with neighboring Des Moines. The city's incorporation occurred on March 6, 1912. Marshalltown has been through several cycles of economic decline since the late 1990s but has made some recent progress including becoming one of Iowa's fastest-growing cities with a population increase of 21%. In 2011, Marshaltown annexed adjacent rural portions of Polk County which gave it an additional 521 acres (200 hectares) of land making it one of Iowa's largest contiguous annexation efforts ever accomplished without voter approval or conflictual zoning changes; this addition brought the total area to 1,902 acres (693 hectares). This growth has led to increased job opportunities for local residents as well as new shopping malls and other businesses near downtown Marshaltown which have attracted more than $1 billion in investment over the past five years alone resulting in an overall increase in jobs worth $68 million dollars locally combined across all square miles within downtown Marshtown alone!
