Sanders and his son, Wesley, shot an 8-inch white bear off a platform at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. The targets were moved to the old city hall in 1907 and again in 1912 when a new shooting range was opened nearby. In 1919, the town’s first gun club was founded and continues to be active today. The most recent target set up in Marshalltown was in 1984. It is now used as part of the town’s rifle or shotgun ranges which are open to all residents regardless of age or experience. Marshalltown is a city in Marshall County, Iowa, United States. The population was 5,531 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The town was founded by General James K. Polk in 1854 as a trading post on the Missouri River. The town's name comes from its location near the small Missouri village of Marshalltowne. The first school in what is now Marshalltown was built in 1855 by local settlers Wm. Hargrave and John Laddington. A second school was built in 1857 by Captain Moses Burtch and Drury Fenton. In 1870, a three-room log schoolhouse and a two-story frame building were completed for $1,200 by Jno. Pugh and Amos Dobybaugh; these were respectively called the "Old School House" (now part of Gorman University) and "New School House". In 1860, Jesse Benton established a store at the junction of Ute Creek and Main Street which became known as Benton's Depot . When that store closed in 1865, it reopened as Iowa State Road No 27 (later US 19). In 1868–69, when William Capps surveyed Indian Territory west of Omaha into which he proposed to settle Mormons living there under military orders from Mormon leader Brigham Young—the area now includes Marshalltown—he located what is now Union Pacific Railroad tracks east of Benton's Depot on land owned by his brother Samuel Capps across Ute Creek from where Marshaltown began today (northwest corner of present day First Church Avenue and south corner of present day Second Church Avenue).
