Marshalltown, Iowa is a town in Jackson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jackson County. The Marshalltown Micropolitan Statistical Area had a population of 6,813 as of 2010. Marshallsburg was founded by General James K. Polk in 1854 as a small community on the west bank of the Missouri River opposite present-day Omaha, Nebraska. In 1875 it became a city and continued to be so until its annexation by Omaha in 1968. The first post office in Marshalltown was established on April 15,1875; it was discontinued June 5th of that year due to lack of customers. A new post office called Marshallsburg was established on October 12th 1870 by order of territorial governor David Fenton and remained open until May 9th 1876 when it closed due to financial troubles within the city limits caused by overpopulation and an increase in freight rates brought about by railroad construction in those days outside town limits. By 1867, most of what is now Marshalltown had been burned down by Confederate forces during their attempt to retake Des Moines County from Union control. The town slowly recovered over time though it struggled economically until World War II when nearby Ames became an early aluminum producer thanks to its location near Lake Michiganbottom Naval Ammunition Depot (NMAD). That same year saw significant growth as military people moved into rural areas across western Iowa due to both World War I and World War II efforts to expand munitions production throughout the Midwest at a scale never before seen. Today, Marshtown still boasts a strong economy with many businesses based in its downtown district including several banks, restaurants, bars and retailers along with a number of colleges such as Drake University (one of only two private universities located within city limits), WestIowa Community College (a public college) and Central Illinois Technical Institute (CITI).
