As early as 1892 there were plans for a railroad to travel through Marshtown and connect with other settlements in central Iowa; however these plans never came to fruition because of financial problems associated with the construction of the main line from Omaha to Council Bluffs via Marshalltown and Clinton City (now Cedar Rapids). In 1902 a group of businessmen led by Oskar Fritsch began negotiations for a railroad throughMarshalltown and Clinton City that would become known as Qwest Railway Company; however this effort also failed because no funding could be found from either side. In 1912 Qwest Railway Company merged with the Chicago & North Western Railroad to form Union Pacific Corporation which purchased Qwest's assets including all interest inMarshallstown; this transaction made Marshstown one of UP's original stations along its mainline from Omaha to Council Bluffs (today Dubuque).
