Marshtown is a city in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. The population was 393 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. The area that would become Marshalltown was first settled by Europeans in 1845 as part of what was then called Dakota Territory. The town started to form around 1850 when people from nearby Ames started moving into the area and began to name their new places after friends or family members. The first store in town was built on Second Street and named for one of its founders, John Marshall. By 1870, most of the original settlers had died from either Indian Wars or diseases brought over by the newcomers. However, early settler John Hickey Pershing kept up some agriculture and cattle ranching until his death in 1887 – leaving behind a large estate which soon became known as Hickey Ranch. In 1907, slight changes were made to the local government structure which provided for a mayor and five councilmembers instead of three with two being elected at-large and one serving as mayor pro tempore (the current form of government).Marshtown's growth continued unabated during World War I when many farmers took up arms against Germany; however, many businesses failed during this time period because there was no market for goods produced by war-time farmers. Marshalltown is a town in Iowa, United States. The population was 9,746 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1836 by Captain John Marshall and his family. The town became a city in 1898. In 1907, Marshalstown authorization to annex what is now North Marshall County was denied by the Iowa General Assembly because of an objection to the name change of a nearby city. The first settler in present-day Marshalltown was Captains John and William Marshall who arrived on horseback early in 1836. They were followed by James Henson and his party on September 12, 1836. On January 25, 1837, Andrew White organized a town meeting at which the name of the new settlement was chosen: "Marshallstown." The first post office opened in Marshallsville on March 3rd, 1840. By 1849 there had been over fifty settlers living here including twelve mechanics and three farmers with two gristmills and two sawmills operating together for local production of flour and other goods needed for trade with Illinois during the winter months when that state's corn crop failed. In 1872 Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) was acquired from Mexico following their war for independence; this area included much of east Texas and northwestern Mexico including modern Marshalltown as well as portions of north central Iowa Territory lying within today's Dallas County north of Interstate 80/ US Highway 616 (the old Santa Fe Trail). As part of this boundary change many residents moved into what are now northeast Dodge County or south Polk County adjacent to then Mexican territory because land prices here were higher than elsewhere within Indian Territory but still below market prices elsewhere within American Kansas or Nebraska when those territories were organized as states beginning in 1912. Many people who lived near Indian Territory also relocated here during this time period due to lack of available land elsewhere while markets continued to be unstable due to political events such as slavery Abolitionism throughout most if not all colonies until finally fully free labor emerged victorious eleven years later following World War II across most colonial regions save for Africa where British colonialism continued until independence that same year resulting in significantly reduced white populations). It should be noted that prior to 1860s few white people lived outside slave owned plantations so large numbers did not migrate away from slave country during these years although some did leave voluntarily due chiefly to difficult living conditions especially after abolition laws took effect starting about 1850 mostly enriching white men who received right-to-work privileges thereby increasing competition among employers for workers rather than improving working conditions) . The town named for General James A. Marshall, who commanded U.S. forces during the Mexican–American War and later served as governor of Kansas City, Missouri. The first settler in Marshtown was Gideon Capps and his family, who arrived on July 9, 1855. They erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1862 the Capps family moved to Enterprise where they operated a store and raised cattle until 1865 when they sold their farm to John Silliker for $1,000 cash. In 1869 the Ottoway brothers built a large stockade around their mill that became known as "the fort." The fort helped protect the town from possible attacks by Native Americans and also supported local commerce. Marshallstown experienced growth during the early 20th century due to its location at the crossroads of several important commodity routes: it became an important hub for grain shipping from northwest Iowa through Nebraska and Illinois to eastern Missouri; oil refineries sprang up in nearby Ankeny; industry began growing with the development of new transportation methods such as railroads and canalboats; and marshlands were developed into fields which produced crops such as corn, wheat, soybeans, cottonseed oil, potatoes and other vegetables
