At first it was called "New Salem" because the new settlers were from Salem, Massachusetts. The first post office in Marshalltown was established in 1872 and named after General Andrew Jackson. In 1903, the name of the town was changed to "Marshalltown" because its founders had named their small community after General James K. Polk (1846-1925). In 1907, an oil well on land adjacent to what is now Marshalltown became operational and led to a boom in business for the town. Businesses grew quickly thanks to transportation options available at that time including a rail line running through town and shuttle buses linking different parts of the county. In addition, gas stations and other retail stores opened up as people began driving into central Iowa for goods they couldn't find locally. By 1960, when population figures were reported for both Marshalls Counties combined, Marshallstown had reached 6,500 residents! This growth continued until 2000 when central Iowa's economy crashed following the dot-com bust and many jobs went away with it. However, over time businesses have regained some footing and today there are over 10 businesses operating within downtown Marshaltown limits alone! Today, Marshallstown remains one of central Iowa's most vibrant communities with a rich history dating back more than half a century - something that makes it such an interesting place to live and visit!

Marshalltown is a city in Marshall County, Iowa, United States. The population was 12,906 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The first settlement in what is now Marshalltown was made by Levi Parsons and his family on November 15, 1855. The town was platted on February 14, 1857 by John Snething and Wm. H. Chaffee. The town site was chosen because it had a fertile soil that could be used for raising crops and cattle. The city's beginnings date back to the early 1800s when fur traders and travelers passed through the area on their way to or from Missouri or other parts of the east coast. One of these early visitors was James Kempton who arrived in 1817 and named his small trading post "Marshallstown." In 1825, Kempton sold his claim to General Adam Clayton Powell who renamed it "Marshalltown" after himself and moved his family there permanently. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Marshalltown served as a Union military base under General Ulysses S Grant during its three years of hostilities; during this time most of the county's residents sided with the Union side however some residents did support Confederate troops until they surrendered at Appomattox Court House in 1865. Although many businesses were destroyed by fire in 1865 due to Union soldiers' looting operations following their defeat at Appomattox Court House, several local merchants quickly rebuilt them using proceeds from insurance policies taken out against such damage caused by war efforts; among these rebuilders were Jno Biddle & Sonsgrain mills which reopened after being closed for two years during Reconstruction; Davenport Brewing Company also re-opened soon afterwards after being closed for several months due to damage done by Union forces while under occupation; also active during this time were various livestock feedlots operated by farmers including those located near present day Marshalltown Elementary School which helped provide necessary food for army troops stationed nearby; newspapers published articles about local events throughout this period giving citizens an insight into what was happening within their community; once reconstruction ended in 1865 most business owners returned to their pre-reconstruction activities although some did continue publishing local newspapers until they went out of print around 1880 Eventually all but one mill closed down during the late 19th century as new technologies replaced traditional methods of production while other businesses slowly declined over time resulting in a loss of jobs overall within CentralIAduring that era Finally only one side job mill remained open up until its closure in 1984 making Marshallsville/Marshallstown one of only two cities remaining entirely unaffected by technological advancements leading up to World War II .
