During World War II many residents left their homes behind to fight or help support their loved ones who were serving overseas; however, they never lost sight of what made their hometown special - music! The first settler in Marshalltown was George Hickey. Marshalltown was founded on the Iowa River by James Walthour and Caleb Smith in 1853. The town plat for Marshalltown was filed on December 12, 1853. The town began establishment on January 3, 1854 when Jno. Broughton erected a log cabin near what is now the Main Street Garage and Post Office building. On February 28, 1854 John Kapp established a blacksmith shop in what is now Beardsley's Hardware store which served as the nucleus of the present day Marshalltown community. A school district was organized in 1860 and named after Cyrus Payson Draper who had donated land to establish it In 1865 an agreement was made between two wagon train companies that would deliver goods from Missouri to Kansas City – one led by Willard Chase and another by Elijah Davenport – with each side contributing $5 per wagon into an endowment fund for the new school district which would be known as "Draper School District". A post office called "Marshallstown" was established at this time and remained in operation until it became discontinued on July 15th, 1907 . In 1898 an act entitled "An Act To Create A Municipal Corporation To Serve And Govern The Village Of Marshallstown"was passed by the state legislature and signed into law by Governor Nicholas Trumbull On October 25th This act created a municipality with a Mayor/Council form of government with powers to regulate commerce within its limits; Hampton Roads Ferry Company being renamed as The Marshalstown Ferry Company; water power being leased to Sprague Water Works Department; electrical lines laid down; schools built; street paving begun including Second Street (later Elm Street) where Main Street meets First Street; Marshalls Mills Dam constructed upstream of present day Town Hall building
