Marshalltown is a city in Hancock County, Iowa, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–Iowa City Metropolitan area. The Marshalltown Land Company was organized on February 14, 1847 and named for General Ulysses S. Grant. The original land grant included parts of present-day Hancock County as well as Burlington Township in Waterloo County. The town site was chosen by a vote of the town's citizens on May 12, 1847. A post office was first established at Marshalltown on October 1, 1849; it continued to be called that until 1906 when it became known as Ames Post Office. On December 4, 1907, the Union Pacific Railroad laid track through Marshalltown from Council Bluffs to Cedar Rapids via Newtonia and Davenport (now Waukee). This made Marshalltown an official railroad town and its city hall became the first municipal building in Iowa Territory (now Des Moines metropolitan area). At this time there were only a few hundred people living in what is now Marshalltown; over time the population exploded to around 30,000 residents by 1930. In 1932 during Franklin D Roosevelt's presidential election campaign he campaigned against incumbent Vice President Henry Wallace who had been running as an independent candidate without any support from either major political party or from many of Iowa's rural counties which had voted overwhelmingly for Wallace over FDR in November of 1931. In response to Roosevelt's aggressive campaigning and his promise to get tough withWallace if elected president - especially on economic issues like high tariffs - many farmers across southern Iowa began defecting to Roosevelt while other rural politicians remained solidly behind Wallace. As a result of these divisions within Iowans' political landscapes - and because Roosevelt could not rely solely upon northern urban liberals who would have largely supported Wallace instead - he narrowly won the state election on November 3rd becoming the 44th US president after eight years of Harry Truman!
