Marshalltown, Iowa is a town in north-central Iowa, United States. The population was 10,471 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Marshall County. The Marshalltown area has been inhabited for over 5,000 years and remains one of the most significant cultural and historical attractions in the state. The first settler in what is now Marshalltown was John Armstrong who arrived on horseback in 1838. He and his family founded a post office here in 1839. Armstrong was also the first mayor of Marshalltown. In 1847, Captain James Kapp Fremont discovered gold near present day Marshalltown while exploring for gold mines in western Iowa. This led to a rush to find these valuable minerals which contributed greatly to the growth of the city and county during this time period. Fremont's discovery resulted in an influx of immigrants from all over central America who came to work on his new discoveries including Spanish settlers, IrishCatholics, Germans, British subjects, Scandinavian farmers and their families as well as many others who brought their skills or money with them when they moved to western Iowa during this time period. The city began rapid growth during this time period thanks to its location within easy access of rich mineral deposits as well as its role as an important transportation hub for these same resources because it had direct connections with Chicago via the Missouri River Railroad and from east Kansas City via Omaha Street Bridge across the Des Moines River. A number of businesses were established during this era including two banks (the First National Bank & Trust Company and Guaranty Bank), several grocery stores/marketplaces (Sears & Roebuck Hardware Store, Jordon’s Drug Store etc.), four hotels (the Masonic Temple Hotel, Union Pacific Hotel etc.), three breweries (Iowa Light Railway Brewery opened by George Wickersham just outside town limits in 1857 and Two Brothers Brewing becameemerging Post Office Brewery) as well as numerous other businesses catering specifically to mining interests such as assay laboratories (Alcoa Metallurgical Laboratory opened by Drury & Co.,later Alcoa Radio Corporation) land agents (J S Forster bought 1 acre adjoining present day Garnet Hill for $4 per acre back then) prostitutes/amusement parks etcetera; all while residents enjoyed easy access to jobs at local mines through various means such as stage coach rides into nearby Leadville or coal trains arriving daily at Garnet Hill station bearing loads of mined ore that would be unloaded onto trucks waiting nearby for transport back home

As part of its celebration of history this year coincided with Iowa Centennial Celebration which included a weeklong processional through downtown streets culminating at City Hall where gifts from citizens were accepted into storage compartments inside building before being displayed on interior walls throughout weeklong event In addition to its namesake general (James Ewart Marshall) there are other notable descendants of early settlers such as Judge Julius Rosenwald (1849-1914), banker Edward Halsey (1860-1966), trucker Willard Macy (1901 - 1988), musician Woody Guthrie (1915 - 1972) and author/ cartoonist Charles Lindbergh (1903 - 1986).
