In 1830, it changed its name to "Marshalltown" after President Andrew Jackson's purchase of land here from Jesse Wills Sr., an early settler. In 1840, when Missouri became a state, Marshallsboro became part of that state as well and continued to be mail order center for farmers living east of Des Moines until about 1870 When railroads came into play new opportunities opened up for businesses like grocery stores and other services which madeMarshalltown an important city.
