Marshalltown, Iowa is a town in Marshall County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,748 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The town was founded in 1855 as a post office and incorporated as a city in 1907. Marshalltown was named for General James A. Marshall, who fought in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. In 1855, Marshalltown consisted of only six families and had no permanent buildings other than a few logs used for shelter during winter months. On December 12, 1855, the first post office in this small town was opened with four citizens serving as clerks: John Horsfall (an insurance agent), Isaac Sisson (a blacksmith), Peter Kapp (a tailor) and David Wright (a farmer). The name of the original village site is still being determined; but it seems likely that it was located on what is now State Route 3 east of present day Marshalltown. However, there are references to an earlier village site on an old road near where US 73 crosses over creekbeds southwest of present day Marshalltown - this Site may have been situated on or very near what is now Center Street between State Route 3 and Creek Road intersection - possibly dating back to about 1830 when Marshal's fathers land grant from King George III included part of present day Marshallstown . In 1907, City Hall & Post Office building were built within one block north of current location of Moores Elementary School which served as both public library and municipal government center until its demolition in 1966 & replacement by new school facility . A fire destroyed most all but two blocks south of Main Street between High Street & State Highway 20 on November 30th 1898 which started about 4 pm local time when some timbers caught alight while being unloaded from wagon train traveling westbound from Council Bluffs to Davenport
Marshalltown was founded in 1847 by General John C. Smith as a military town on the Iowa River, about 12 miles west of Des Moines. In 1854, Marshalltown became the capital of Iowa and it has kept that title ever since. The city is named for General Smith and contains a statue of him outside the City Hall.
